Mistaken Identity

Mistaken Identity – by Don & Susie Van Ryn and Newell, Colleen & Whitney Cerak With Mark Tabb

“Meet Laura Van Ryn and Whitney Cerak: one buried under the wrong name, one in a coma and being cared for by the wrong family.
Five lives were lost in a tragic accident involving a Taylor University van, and one student, severely injured and comatose, was rushed to the hospital.
Five funerals were held. Families, faculty, students, and communities grieved their losses and joined in prayer and hope as the one young woman, Laura Van Ryn, fought for her life in a hospital bed. The national news spread the story, and people everywhere shared the grief and the hope.
Five weeks passed for the Cerak family. Believing they had buried their daughter, the Ceraks clung to their faith and worshipped God through their grief, learning to look forward with hope to an eternal reunion with their lovely daughter Whitney.
Five weeks passed for the Van Ryns. Keeping a constant bedside vigil over their precious daughter Laura, they sat and prayed and hoped. Confronted with tubes and surgeries, vital signs and healing signs, they rejoiced at each tiny advance toward recovery. Their friends and church and family members, along with a steady stream of students, celebrated with them each sign of Laura’s healing.
And then the shock!
“Okay, Laura, I would like you to write your name for me,” the occupational therapist said.
W-H-I-T-N-E-Y.”
A grief reversed. A hope deferred. The stunning true story of two families trading places from graveside to bedside.  (from book cover)

Review:

I recall hearing about this story when it happened back in 2006. I remember thinking how horrible it must have been to be the family who thought their daughter was alive, only to find out she had been buried. By another family. I still feel that way, of course, but this book has shown how amazing these two families are. I read this book because I remembered hearing about it when it happened. I started it during the time I was having a difficult time focusing on reading and books, and I found I had a hard time putting it down. It is an incredible story and, as I said, both of these families are amazing. They are both very religious families, and while I do not share their faith in God and religion, I was amazed at the sense of community I felt while reading this book. All involved turned to people of their faith, their families, and God for guidance and support to get them through this tragedy they found themselves in. I was blown away by the strength they all had, as well as how understanding and accepting they all were. When the Van Ryns discovered their daughter, Laura, had in fact died the night of the accident, they were not angry that they had been taking care of a stranger, but happy they were there to help her through such a difficult time. And when the Ceraks found out that their daughter, Whitney, was the girl in the hospital, they truly felt for the Van Ryns because they knew how it felt to lose a child.
I think this story is one of hope, community, and the miracles of life. After I finished reading Mistaken Identity, I sat and stared at the book for a while, just trying to process everything I had learned. It’s hard not to reflect on your own life after reading such a story, and you certainly appreciate the people you have in your life. If you have an interest in non-fiction books, I suggest you read this book. Even if you don’t, it is a very interesting read. I give this book a 3.5/5.

Celebrating 1 Year!!!!!

“We read to know that we are not alone.”
William Nicholson

Wow, I signed in to my blog and went to my very first post and realized - my blog is one year old today! 42 posts, 26 followers and a Facebook page with 34 likes later, here I am! I'm not going to lie, having a blog is pretty challenging. Finding the time to work on it (especially with no internet at home) and trying to keep my reading varied to appeal to many (I apologize if I may have been a little stuck on the same stuff) can be tough. I am up for the challenge, though!!!

After speaking with my friend and blog expert, Meg Courtney (check out her blog at http://blog.megcourtneyphotography.com and her Facebook page Meg Courtney Photography), I feel inspired and ready to make some much needed changes. My goals over the next year are to become a better blogger, get more followers on my blog and "likes" on my Facebook page, and to share all of the books I love with you!!!!! I would also like to interview more authors, as I was lucky enough to interview Canadian author Lilian Nattel, author of Web of Angels, and American author Sarah Jio, author of The Violets of March. I will be posting on a more regular basis and my goal is to blog 2-3 times each week. These may not all be reviews of books I have read, but please stay tuned for some fun ideas (again, thank you to Meg!) and maybe even some...contests? Gift cards? Free books? Eh? Haha.

I need to send out another thank you to Jennifer, who is one of my absolute favourite readers and people. Even though I have not been with Chapters for over a year now she still sends me books to review and it is very exciting coming home to that bright yellow envelope! I am so thankful that I have been able to continue reviewing books for Random House and I am hoping that this blog and my passion for reading and reviewing will lead me somewhere with regards to a job, even if it is something I do "on the side."

As some of you may know, I have been having difficulties reading lately, as my focus has not been the greatest. It feels as though something is missing in my life when I am not engulfed in a book and I am doing everything in my power to "get my reading back." Luckily, thanks to Helen Dunmore, I have found myself immersed in the world of Ingo, where the sea calls to Sapphire, land calls to Connor, and I find myself wishing I were a mermaid haha.

“Until I feared I would lose it, I never loved to read. One does not love breathing.”
Harper Lee, To Kill a Mockingbird

Thank you all for your support over the past year. It really means a lot to me and I look forward to bringing a little smile to your day, updates on me and my life, and hopefully adding some books to your bookshelves!

Happy Reading!

Rebel Heart by Moira Young

Receiving an advanced reader copy of this book was a bit of a shock to me. I quit the book mill almost a year ago and thought that I lost my chance at getting the REALLY good books! Well, turns out I got it and my friends who were still working there didn't! Crazy? Yes. Amazing? HELL yes!

As most of you know, I was lucky enough to read a manuscript copy of Blood Red Road, book 1 in the Dustlands trilogy. It was SO amazing and I am so grateful that I was chosen as part of a group of Indigo/Chapters employees to pre-screen it. I loved it for many reasons, including the fact that the author is Canadian! Random House put out a special ARC of Blood Red Road for Indigo/Chapters employees and my review ended up on the back!

I had not performed any research on Rebel Heart before I received the book, nor have I done any since. I like to be surprised and have no idea what to expect with a book. And after the way Blood Red Road ended, I really had no idea what Young was going to do with the next two! This book was so full of surprises, and there were twists and turns thrown in to knock the reader off balance!

Rebel Heart begins with Jack and Saba separated and trying to find their way back to each other. At the beginning you get a bit of the story from Jack's point of view and then are left to wonder where he is and what he's doing. And Saba. Well, let's just say she's a bit of a different person from BRR.

The usual cast is back, along with a whole slew of newcomers! And, of course, this series would not be what it is without Nero! Man, I would love to have a pet crow like Nero! He's a feisty little creature! I love him! Haha.

Young has such a brilliant mind and she never fails to surprise me. I get sucked right into her reading, as she describes everything in such a way that you feel like you are right there with Saba (I just realized I said that exact thing in my BRR review lol.) There were times in this book when I really did not know what to think. I didn't know if the author was messing with my head, telling it all like it was, and I no longer knew up from down. I was literally on the edge of my seat, gasping because I was in shock by some of the decisions she made in this second installment.

Rebel Heart made me SUPER anxious for the third and final book in the trilogy. I know some of the loose ends she needs to tie up, but I wonder what else Young will throw our way. Keep up the AMAZING work, Moira! I can't WAIT to see what you come up with in the future!!!!

Happy Reading everyone!
